The CGV day 11 and 12 - Opening Ceremony

At last the day of the opening ceremony had arrived, there was no training available to us and the free shuttle buses were reduced for preperation for the evenings events, we were bored! A good idea stuck us, lets go play some footie and frisby! Grand idea we all say. So we leave with assurances to the manager and coach that we'll be carefull and all watch over each other. It was only a few hours before the ceremony, what could go wrong???

Once again I say OOOPS!!!

The combination of a bit of bad luck, some un-even ground and a poor pass of the ball leaves poor Jenny with a sprain to the ankle.
A big shout out and thanks to all the medical and support staff from team Wales who were on the scene in record time and went to great lengths to support, diagnose and repair. Nice one guys!!!! The whole management and support team came through in a big way, so Jen could still attend the opening ceremony, with a wheelchair and plank of wood to keep her leg up (otherwise doctor say NO). On the bright side she was asked to join the front of the procession and as chief chair minion I was there to!!!

Onto the ceremony itself.

The bit you don't see on TV, the athlete holding area.

This is the only time all the athletes are assembled in one one place together.

When there's a crowd, there's an inflatable - this time a kangaroo!!!

Emma showing the team Scotland formal wear.

A view from inside the stadium.

Hey Neil, GGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Someone looks happy!!!

We can say "we were there!!"

Yep, we were that close!!!

While wandering to get some lunch this afternoon, look who I bumped into..

The ceremony was brilliant to be a part of, and those fireworks at the end were amazing. Though the falling (hot) powder did cause some issues and a slightly sore head in my case, but all is well now.

There we go, a busy day yesterday. Jenny is up and about today with a set of sticks (watch out people)!! She has reported some pain and soreness but thankfully she is now mobile and in good spirits. She is going to take each day as it comes and shoot her match tomorrow the best she can. We all say good luck Jen!!!!!

Competition starts in earnest in the next few days for us and I will endevour to keep you as updated as possible. Heres hoping and wishing all athletes at the games a productive, freindly and successfull Commonwealth Games.

Dave

Hi Dave,

Looks like everyone had fun at the opening.

For those of us back in here there is some coverage of the shooting on the BBC. 1430 til 1530 most days on interactive stream 5. A full schedule in on the BBC Commonwealth pages.

Hope to see all of you on there at some time.

Hey baby, grand pics of the ceremony. I watched the whole thing on tele - some very random bits before you all came in, like a tram being dropped down into the stadium with wings (I didn't quite understand the significance of that one!!), dancing etc. I videoed the whole of the ceremony and have a copy of today's Western Mail with a great pic of you in it - I now understand the flashy thing round the neck!!

I hear we have a medal already too - bronze in freestyle 400m swimming! Hoorah! Come on Wales!

Hope Jen's ankle's better soon (that'll teach you....!!).

Keeping everything crossed for everyone, much love Rachel xxx
